Lousado, a parish of Vila Nova de Famalicão, holds two things at once: a tyre plant making more than eighteen million units a year and exporting almost all of them to seventy markets, and a rail freight terminal with four tracks of seven hundred and fifty metres on the electrified Linha do Minho. Whether that terminal is working could not be established. The rest of the district runs on knitted apparel, precision optics and electrical machinery, which calls for scheduled trailer work rather than tipper or tanker competence.

Braga district is a factory economy and the numbers say so: secondary employment sits within two and a half per cent of tertiary across the Cávado sub-region. Driver work here is tethered to plants rather than to distribution centres.
Write the vacancy the way the plants do. Motorista de pesados, the category given as C or C+E, the vehicle and the shift pattern named, and a plain statement of whether the CAM must already be held or whether the course is on you. Put it up at www.fastdriver.eu/jobs/portugal under the municipality rather than the district, because Guimarães and Barcelos are separate labour markets from the city.

Now the part the statistics imply without stating. Every other northern district that is cheap to recruit in is also emptying, because the interior pays less once its working-age population has left. Cávado pays well below the metropolitan figure while growing, holds the lowest share of residents over sixty-five in the north, and runs deep-poverty support at about a third of the national rate. Cheap and healthy together exists nowhere else up here, which makes this the district to put a vehicle in if the work can reach it. The permissions sequence sits on the Portugal employer page.
Hiring here runs to scheduled trailer work between plants and ports, outbound finished goods on groupage and curtainsider, concrete and aggregate work on the construction side, and local distribution around the four big towns.
Motorista de pesados on C+E, running scheduled trailers between a factory gate and a port or a customer. Tyres out of Lousado are high volume and low density, which fills a trailer by cube long before it fills it by weight. National work, often on a fixed daily cycle.
Knitted apparel is about a third of Cávado exports and precision instruments another fifth, so much of what leaves here is light, valuable and time-sensitive. Advertised as motorista de pesados C+E, with seal discipline mattering more than sheeting and strapping. National and Portugal and Spain work.
If the Lousado terminal is operating, the work it generates is short shuttle running between the rail head and local plants, on C+E. Its status could not be confirmed, so advertise against the factories first and treat terminal work as something to ask about rather than to promise.
Category C or C+E for aggregates and ready-mixed concrete. The one driving-adjacent vacancy captured inside this district was a manobrador de autobetoneira at Guimarães, sitting at the bottom of the pay range found anywhere in the north. National, day radius, home nightly.
Motorista de ligeiros on category B, or a rigid on C badged motorista de pesados, serving Braga, Guimarães, Barcelos and Famalicão. The single Braga listing a national haulier placed in either pass was a category B role, so this is the visible end of the local market. National multi-drop.
No advert located inside this district stated a heavy driver wage across two research passes, so a candidate here has nothing local to measure you against and will use Porto as the yardstick instead. Give the municipality, the category and the allowance line. And do not borrow the interior's depopulation story to explain a thin field: this pool is growing.
This is a compact district by northern standards, a little over three hundred residents to the square kilometre, with four substantial towns close enough together that a driver can live in one and work in another, and the coast at Esposende on its western edge. A commute here is a choice between towns rather than between a town and nowhere.
Lousado is the address that matters, a parish of Vila Nova de Famalicão holding both the tyre plant and the rail terminal. An employer recruiting in this district is competing for labour in that parish's shadow whether or not it means to be.
Vila Nova de Famalicão holds twenty of the sixty-eight large enterprises counted across the Cávado and Ave sub-regions, against seventeen in Braga and fifteen in Guimarães. The city is not where the big employers are.
Out on the coast, Esposende is where the A28 section towards Antas came off the toll list, so the district's western access got cheaper. Barcelos and Vila Verde both carry driver listings and both sit between the city and that coast.
Figures published for Cávado or for Ave do not describe this district. Ave reaches into Vila Real district at Mondim de Basto and into Porto district at Santo Tirso and Trofa, while Cávado covers only six of the municipalities here.
Driver work differs sharply between the two port cities, the interior districts on the Spanish corridors, the Alentejo and the two island regions. Open another district to see the hiring information that applies there.
Portuguese drivers search in Portuguese. An advert written only in English will miss most of the domestic market.
Motorista de pesados is the dominant advert title, with motorista de ligeiros second. Pesados and ligeiros, heavy and light, is the first thing a Portuguese advert settles, and a driver reads it before anything else.
Write the licence as C+E. That form appears more often in real adverts than CE.
Two terms that work elsewhere do not work here. Motorista TIR appeared in no advert found, unlike in Romania where it is standard, so an advert using it reads as written from outside the market. Servico iberico was not found either, so describe Portugal and Spain work in plain words rather than reaching for the label. Internacional is the word that signals work beyond the peninsula.
The qualification is the CAM. Adverts list it alongside the cartao de tacografo and ADR where the load needs it. Name only what the role genuinely requires.
Pay needs more than one figure. Portuguese adverts quote a base salary with ajudas de custo, and the TIR premium stated separately where it applies. An advert giving only the base reads as badly paid even when the total is competitive.
Condutor is the formal word that appears in regulations and on documents. Motorista is what the job is called. Use motorista in the advert and keep condutor for the paperwork.
What this district's own adverts show is not heavy driver vocabulary at all. The two vacancies located inside it across two passes were a motorista de ligeiros on category B and a manobrador de autobetoneira, so the words a Braga jobseeker sees most often are light vehicle and plant words. If your job is C+E trunking, spell that out rather than trusting motorista de pesados to carry the distinction on its own.

Portugal is more open than most of Europe on this, and it is worth saying plainly because employers rarely believe it. There is no labour market test and no quota for a work visa. You are not required to demonstrate that no Portuguese or EU candidate was available.
What has changed is the way in. The route that allowed someone to enter and regularise afterwards has been abolished, and a great deal of guidance still online describes it. Acting on that guidance would cost months. The visa now has to be obtained before travel.
The same applies to the Portuguese speaking countries route, which was known for allowing entry first and paperwork later. It now requires a residence visa obtained in the country of origin. For Brazilian recruitment in particular, that is the single biggest practical change in recent years.
One planning point is worth more than the rest put together. The residence visa itself authorises work for an initial period, so the start date is not tied to the processing queue for the residence card. Employers who think the driver cannot begin until the card arrives have the sequence wrong and lose weeks to it.
The job seeker visa does not help here. It was restricted to highly qualified work and a driving role does not come within it.
Employers in Braga may receive applications from drivers based in Portugal, elsewhere in the EU and EEA, Switzerland, the Portuguese speaking countries, the wider European region, Asia, Africa, North America, Latin America and other eligible international markets.
EU, EEA and Swiss citizens may work in Portugal without authorisation. Licence validity and the professional qualification still apply to them exactly as they do to a Portuguese driver.
One employer duty has a short fuse and catches people out. The hire has to be reported to Social Security in the twenty four hours before the contract takes effect, not afterwards. There is a second notification to the labour authority before work begins, which almost no published guidance covers. Penalties scale with the size of the company and can include repayment of public funding and publication of the decision.
A candidate's ability to work here depends on nationality, residence status, professional qualifications, driving licence validity and the requirements of the individual position. Name the licence category in the advert. A Portuguese driver reads it first, and C+E in the headline settles whether the job is theirs.
Freight work uses C and C+E, with C1 and C1E for lighter rigid vehicles. Passenger transport uses D and D1.
Ages depend on which qualification route the driver took, which is unusual and worth understanding. C and CE open at twenty one, or at eighteen for a driver holding the full professional qualification. D and DE open at twenty four, or at twenty one on the same basis. The shorter accelerated route does not buy the same reduction, so two drivers of the same age can hold different entitlements.
Every heavy renewal needs a medical assessment and a psychological one. Both, not one.
There is an age limit that catches fleets out. At sixty seven a CE entitlement drops to a much lower weight, and the passenger categories end and cannot be renewed. Worth knowing before a rota is built around one driver.
Foreign licence exchange splits three ways, and the middle tier is where offers die. Drivers from the Portuguese speaking countries and from OECD states exchange every category with no driving examination, with a psychological assessment for the heavy ones. Drivers from other convention countries exchange only the light categories directly and must sit Portuguese theory and practical tests for anything heavy. Drivers from countries outside the conventions cannot drive on the licence at all.
Brazil is the one to get right, because of the volume. The recognition arrangement covers car and motorcycle categories only, so a Brazilian driver cannot work heavy on the Brazilian licence. They can exchange into a Portuguese heavy licence without an examination, which is a good position, but the exchange is not optional and it has to happen before they drive for you.
Then there is the ninety day trap. A driver has ninety days from establishing residence to lodge the exchange while still driving. After that they may lodge for up to two years, but they may not drive in the meantime. Past two years a practical test becomes compulsory. Employers plan around the two year figure and miss the ninety day one, and the driver sits idle while the file moves.
A professional qualification obtained outside the EU or EEA is not recognised. The real sequence is exchange the licence, then take the accelerated initial qualification, then pass the aptitude examination. Budget for all three rather than for the visa alone.
Portugal has no state forklift licence. The permission rests on certified training plus the employer's own written authorisation. The driver attestation needed for a third country national is issued by the IMT and requires a declaration from the labour authority that the driver is lawfully employed. Verifying the original documents remains the employer's responsibility.
Braga has a confirmed IMT counter, on Rua do Poente at Santa Tecla, open weekdays only from nine in the morning until four in the afternoon and closed on the twenty-fourth of June for the municipal holiday. Two things follow from that. A driver sent to deal with a licence exchange, a revalidation or a tachograph card loses most of a working day and cannot do it on a Saturday, so put it in the rota rather than in the driver's own time. And nothing in that counter's published information says whether driving examinations or CAM certification happen there, so do not promise a candidate a local test date until IMT confirms one. Separately, the A28 section from Esposende to Antas came off the toll list, which changed the cost of reaching the coast from the western side of the district.

Lousado, a parish of Vila Nova de Famalicão, is an unusual concentration. The same parish hosts Portugal’s fourth-largest exporter: a tyre plant with capacity above eighteen million units a year, and a rail freight terminal of two hundred and twenty thousand square metres, which its promoters describe as the largest on the Iberian peninsula. Freight and labour competition in this district both run through there.
Nobody involved in this research could establish that, and it matters enough to say so plainly. The land was assembled from more than twenty owners after years of negotiation, consent, and investment, and the opening date has been repeatedly deferred across successive announcements. Son’t plan intermodal shuttle work around it, n’t write it off either, and ask APDL or the operator directly before quoting a customer.
A very large, steady outbound flow. Capacity sits above eighteen million tyres a year, more than ninety-nine per cent of output is exported, and the plant ships to seventy markets. Tyres are bulky and light, so they fill a trailer before they weigh it down, meaning volume vehicles on scheduled runs rather than tippers. Headcount was rising at the last count, so it is also bidding for local labour.
Famalicão, on the evidence. Across the Cávado and Ave sub-regions, sixty-eight large enterprises were counted, and Famalicão holds twenty of them against seventeen in Braga and fifteen in Guimarães. An employer pitching at the city centre is pitching at the wrong municipality for industrial driver work, although the city remains the better bet for distribution and for anything that needs a counter visit.
It is the opposite shape. Secondary sector employment across Cávado sits within two and a half per cent of tertiary, which for a European region today is strikingly industrial. The work that follows is plant-tethered: inbound components, outbound finished goods, scheduled trailers on a factory clock. Porto next door is services and distribution with a manufacturing tail, and the two districts want different driver histories.
Nothing reliable comes out of the adverts, and that is the honest position after two passes: we found no heavy goods driver vacancy with a stated wage in this district. What exists is an all-sector sub-regional average for Cávado, which sits well below both the national figure and the Porto metropolitan one, and which is not driver pay. The one local driving-adjacent wage captured was a concrete mixer role at the floor of the market.
It is doing the reverse, and this is the sharpest contrast in the north. Cávado grew through the measured period, holds the lowest share of residents aged sixty-five or over of any sub-region up here, and claims deep-poverty support at roughly a third of the national rate. The emptying-out story belongs to Vila Real and Bragança. Importing it into a Braga advert will make you sound like you have not looked.
Not from this research. Optical and precision instruments make up a fifth of Cávado exports and were the fastest-growing category in the basket, so the sector is real and quantified. Still, we couldn’t confirm a named plant behind it across two passes. Build the advert around the load type and the municipality instead, because naming a factory you cannot verify is the quickest way to lose a candidate’s trust.
It did, and it surprised people. This district was placed under a red snow warning alongside Porto, Viana do Castelo, Vila Real and Viseu during one severe depression, and the A7 had constrained circulation on its eastern reach from the A24 junction towards Ribeira de Pena. Braga is not a mountain district, and it is not immune either, so the eastern municipalities deserve slack in a winter schedule.
One of two, and neither matches the district, so ask which before you price anything. Cávado covers six municipalities here, including the city, Barcelos and Esposende. Ave covers most of the rest but also reaches into Vila Real district at Mondim de Basto and into Porto district at Santo Tirso and Trofa. A number presented as a Braga district average is almost certainly a sub-regional one.
There is none, and no airport either. Leixões, in Porto district, is the working port for freight out of here, andPorto’ss airport sits between the two cities across Maia, Matosinhos and Vila do Conde. What this district does hold is a rail connection: the Linha do Minho is fully electrified and runs through Nine, the junction for the city, with freight capacity on the line reported as tripled after modernisation.
Expect it rather than assume it, and label the difference in your own planning. Exports across the two sub-regions come to about a tenth of the national total, and the Lousado plant sends almost everything it makes to seventy markets, so cross-border work is structurally likely. By contrast, no advert in this district mentioned international or any Iberian scope in either pass. The structure points one way, and the evidence is silent.
On that qualification, no. The reduction below twenty-one for C and CE depends on which initial course was taken. The full common qualification, which runs to at least two hundred and eighty hours, delivers code 95 for C and CE from eighteen. The accelerated version, at least a hundred and forty hours, gives C1 and C1E at eighteen but C and CE only from twenty-one. That distinction is where young driver plans fall apart.
Thirty-five hours, taken before the qualification expires rather than after. IMT publishes the five-year cycle without the hour count, and the haulage association’s own course catalogue confirms the figure, where the refresher runs for that length. Diarise it against the code 95 expiry on the licence instead of the licence expiry itself, because the two dates are not the same and only one of them stops the driver working.
There is, and almost no published guidance mentions it. Hiring a foreign or stateless worker triggers a notification to the labour inspection service, made electronically, before the worker begins work, and again within fifteen days of the contract ending. It is separate from Social Security admission, and it triggers earlier. Missing it is a serious administrative offence, and it does not apply to drivers who are EU or EEA nationals.
In its parts, because that is how the sector agreement builds it. There is a base rate, then salary complements that vary by vehicle type and by whether the run is domestic, Iberian or international, then seniority increments that fall due every three years up to a limit of five. Iberian and international drivers also draw the monthly ajuda de custo TIR, paid across thirteen months. An advert that quotes only a base salary reads as a poor offer.
A vacancy here competes with a tyre plant, a rail terminal that may or may not be running, and twenty large firms in one municipality. Say which town, which category and which allowances, and the applications will find you.
