The qualification is the CAM. Adverts list it alongside the cartao de tacografo and ADR where the load needs it. Name only what the role genuinely requires.
Pay needs more than one figure. Portuguese adverts quote a base salary with ajudas de custo, and the TIR premium stated separately where it applies. An advert giving only the base reads as badly paid even when the total is competitive.
Condutor is the formal word that appears in regulations and on documents. Motorista is what the job is called. Use motorista in the advert and keep condutor for the paperwork.

Employers who think the driver cannot begin until the card arrives have the sequence wrong and lose weeks to it.
The job seeker visa does not help here. It was restricted to highly qualified work and a driving role does not come within it.

The shorter accelerated route does not buy the same reduction, so two drivers of the same age can hold different entitlements.
Every heavy renewal needs a medical assessment and a psychological one. Both, not one.
There is an age limit that catches fleets out. At sixty seven a CE entitlement drops to a much lower weight, and the passenger categories end and cannot be renewed. Worth knowing before a rota is built around one driver.
Foreign licence exchange splits three ways, and the middle tier is where offers die. Drivers from the Portuguese speaking countries and from OECD states exchange every category with no driving examination, with a psychological assessment for the heavy ones. Drivers from other convention countries exchange only the light categories directly and must sit Portuguese theory and practical tests for anything heavy. Drivers from countries outside the conventions cannot drive on the licence at all.
Brazil is the one to get right, because of the volume. The recognition arrangement covers car and motorcycle categories only, so a Brazilian driver cannot work heavy on the Brazilian licence. They can exchange into a Portuguese heavy licence without an examination, which is a good position, but the exchange is not optional and it has to happen before they drive for you.
Then there is the ninety day trap. A driver has ninety days from establishing residence to lodge the exchange while still driving. After that they may lodge for up to two years, but they may not drive in the meantime. Past two years a practical test becomes compulsory. Employers plan around the two year figure and miss the ninety day one, and the driver sits idle while the file moves.
A professional qualification obtained outside the EU or EEA is not recognised. The real sequence is exchange the licence, then take the accelerated initial qualification, then pass the aptitude examination. Budget for all three rather than for the visa alone.
Portugal has no state forklift licence. The permission rests on certified training plus the employer's own written authorisation. The driver attestation needed for a third country national is issued by the IMT and requires a declaration from the labour authority that the driver is lawfully employed. Verifying the original documents remains the employer's responsibility.
The A25 runs from Gafanha da Nazaré, beside the port, to Vilar Formoso, and the long interior stretch lost its tolls. The section between Ponte da Barra and Angeja did not. The Comunidade Intermunicipal da Região de Aveiro was still demanding its removal a year on, arguing that the A25 is the critical access route to the port and that charging there penalises regional activity. The same statement asked for bypasses on the IC1 and the EN109 to absorb traffic coming off the A17, A25 and A29, which tells you which roads the local authorities consider congested. Whether the toll removal applies to vehicle classes 3 and 4 on the same terms was not stated in the source, so confirm the heavy position with the concessionaire before costing a route.

Not on the Brazilian document. The recognition arrangement with Brazil covers only car and motorcycle categories, and drivers of heavy goods vehicles, heavy passenger vehicles, and anything with a trailer must exchange. The position is still good: Brazil sits in the tier that exchanges every category held, with no driving examination, subject to a psychological assessment for the heavy categories. The exchange is compulsory.
Ask to see the driving licence with code 95 endorsed. For a driver resident in Portugal, that endorsement is the current instrument, and the separate carta de qualificação de motorista is now issued only in occasional cases to non-residents. An old CAM card is not the document you want. Periodic training runs on a five-year cycle, and the endorsement carries the governing date.
Ninety days from establishing residence, and the exchange request must be lodged within that window. After day ninety, the request is still accepted for up to two years, but the driver may not drive while it sits there. Past two years a practical examination becomes compulsory. Employers plan around the two-year figure and get caught by the ninety-day one, which is where offers fall apart.
Before, and the window is tight: employers must communicate the admission in the twenty-four hours before the contract takes effect, through Segurança Social Direta. A narrow exception covers very short-term and shift work. An employer who reports on the driver’s first morning has already committed an offence, and where a breach is detected the law presumes work began on the first day of the sixth month before.
There is no state licence and no register to verify one against. The obligation sits in the work equipment rules, which permit only properly qualified workers to drive self-propelled work equipment, and that is met through certified training plus a written authorisation naming the operator. You keep the file, which also means an inspector asks you for it rather than the driver.
For each third-country driver, Portugal requires a Certificado de Motorista para Nacionais de Países Terceiros, issued by IMT to the undertaking rather than the driver, and valid for five years. IMT will not issue it without a declaration from ACT confirming the driver is employed on the conditions Portuguese law requires. That declaration is the step nobody budgets for, and it separates a lawfully employed driver from one you can legally send abroad.
Nothing from you. An EU, EEA, or Swiss driver works from day one, and you shouldn’t ask for any immigration documents. The duty is the driver’s own, and it is easy to miss: after three months of residence, they register at the câmara municipal where they live within thirty days of that period ending, and failing to do so carries a fine.
