Normandie runs the second highest logistics share of salaried employment in France, and lorry drivers are the largest single occupation inside it, about 19,600 people. Le Havre is the country's leading container port, Rouen leads Europe on grain export, and the three cross-Channel terminals at Caen-Ouistreham, Cherbourg and Dieppe move around 200,000 lorries a year between them. Port and maritime logistics employ close to five times the national share here, and the driver roles advertised show it.

Five departements, about 3.35 million residents, and an economy where exports account for around 35% of regional output. Road transport takes 46.1% of dedicated logistics employment, and Rouen, Le Havre and Caen together hold over half of that employment between them.

Port traction on permis CE, shuttling containers and trailers between terminal and inland depot. It is a title that barely exists away from a port region, and Le Havre and Rouen generate it daily. Say whether the driver works to terminal slots and who books them.
Temperature-controlled work on permis CE, tied to the region's food and seafood flows, where Seafrigo, STEF and Chereau are among the named operators and bodybuilders. State the temperature regime, the number of drops and whether the driver handles the load at delivery.
Tanker driving on permis CE with an ADR certificate for the relevant class. Name the product group, because ADR is specific and the five year clock starts at the basic examination, not at any specialisation added to the certificate later.
Hooklift and tipper work on permis CE, advertised here as conducteur SPL ampliroll bennes. It is depot-based work serving construction and waste, and it competes for the same CE holders as the port roles do. Name the depot and the daily pattern.
Passenger work on permis D with FIMO voyageurs, covering scheduled services, school transport and coach hire. The region runs its own Nomad network, and permis D with FIMO and FCO voyageurs is trained at Saint-Etienne-du-Rouvray. Conducteur receveur means fares as well as driving.
Every advert title captured in this region used SPL, so a rigid role has to say permis C explicitly. Name the port or depot too: Le Havre, Rouen, Caen and Cherbourg are separate labour markets, not one.
Normandie has three centres rather than one: Le Havre is the largest commune, Rouen is the prefecture, and the regional council works from Caen as well as Rouen. A driver judging a commute is measuring against the Seine axis, the Caen plain or the Cotentin, and those rarely overlap.
The Seine axis carries Rouen, Le Havre, Saint-Jean-de-Folleville, Port-Jerome, Grand-Couronne and Heudebouville, with warehouse projects strung along it. Port traction and container work sit here, close to the terminals.
Around Caen the work changes: Mondeville, Carpiquet, Villers-Bocage and Vire Normandie. Vire has the highest logistics share of employment of any zone in the region, around 15.3%, which is not something a map would tell you.
The Manche and the Cotentin stand apart. Cherbourg, La Hague and Periers draw on a departement where unemployment runs around 5.5%, among the lowest in France, so recruiting drivers there is genuinely competitive.
Dieppe sits on its own pattern, with sailings to Newhaven and inspection areas expanding ahead of the Entry-Exit System. Drivers there work a short crossing and a fixed rota, unlike the longer work out of the Seine axis.

French drivers search in French. An advert written only in English will miss most of the domestic market.
Two letters carry most of the meaning. PL means a rigid lorry and maps to permis C. SPL means an articulated combination and maps to permis CE. Using them the wrong way round marks an advert as written by someone outside the trade, and drivers notice.
The common advert titles are chauffeur routier, chauffeur SPL, chauffeur PL, conducteur SPL and conducteur routier for freight, chauffeur livreur for delivery work, and conducteur de car for coach work.
Conducteur receveur is worth knowing. It means a bus driver who also handles fares and passenger contact, and it is the standard title on urban network vacancies.
Write the licence as permis C or permis CE. Adverts also use the older EC form, so either is understood, and the category usually appears in the advert title rather than buried in the body.
FIMO is the initial qualification and FCO the periodic refresher. Adverts list them by name alongside the carte de qualification de conducteur and code 95. Name only what the role genuinely needs.
The carte de conducteur for the digital tachograph appears in most freight adverts, and ADR where the load requires it.
One term is regularly misunderstood. CACES is an assessment scheme, not a licence. The legal permission to operate a forklift is the employer's own autorisation de conduite, and the CACES supports it rather than replacing it.
Pay is referenced against the convention collective nationale des transports routiers and its coefficient system. Stating a coefficient, or a clear gross figure, does more for an advert than a vague range.

For a candidate from outside the EU, the employer applies for the autorisation de travail through the ANEF portal. The application is the employer's to make, not the candidate's, and silence from the administration counts as a refusal rather than an approval, so track it rather than waiting.
Pay must reach at least the SMIC or the higher rate set by the convention collective nationale des transports routiers, whichever is greater. For driver roles the collective agreement is usually the binding figure, so check the coefficient for the post before you advertise a salary.
Unless an exemption applies, the employer must have published the vacancy for three weeks within the preceding six months before applying. The main exemption is the shortage occupation list, which is set by arrêté and is regional, so the list that matters is the annexe for this region rather than a national one.
Employers in Normandie may receive applications from drivers based in France, elsewhere in the EU and EEA, Switzerland, the wider European region, Asia, Africa, Gulf countries, North America, Latin America and other eligible international markets.
EU, EEA and Swiss citizens may work in France without a work authorisation. Licence validity and the professional qualification still apply to them exactly as they do to a French driver.
Where a French operator employs a driver who is a third country national, an attestation de conducteur is also required. It is issued by the DREAL, or the DRIEAT in the Paris region, and it is separate from the work authorisation.
A candidate's ability to work here depends on nationality, residence status, professional qualifications, driving licence validity and the requirements of the individual position. Nationality alone never settles it. Drivers can check their own position through our driving licence eligibility guidance.

Name the licence category in the advert. A French driver reads it first, and PL or SPL in the title tells them immediately whether the job is theirs.
Freight work uses permis C for rigid vehicles and permis CE for combinations, with C1 and C1E for lighter rigids. Passenger transport uses D and D1. Delivery roles in light vehicles sit in category B.
Age limits matter when planning a pipeline. C1 and C1E open at eighteen, C and CE at twenty one, D1 and D1E at twenty one and D and DE at twenty four. C and CE drop to eighteen for a driver holding the initial qualification.
Heavy category validity is tied to age rather than a fixed term, and every renewal requires a medical examination by an approved doctor. The interval shortens as the driver gets older, which is worth knowing before you build a rota around one person.
FIMO is the initial qualification, one hundred and forty hours, with a longer initial route of two hundred and eighty. FCO is thirty five hours every five years. Both are evidenced by the carte de qualification de conducteur and by code 95.
The passerelle between goods and passenger work runs thirty five hours in either direction, but read it carefully before you plan around it. It converts the qualification, not the licence. A driver moving to coach work must already hold the passenger category, so it widens your field only among drivers who already hold both.
Foreign licences need care. An EU or EEA licence is valid in France. Outside that, exchange depends on a reciprocity agreement with the issuing country, and the agreements differ in scope: some cover all categories, many cover only cars and motorcycles. A heavy category can only be exchanged where the agreement covers it, and the exchange must be started within a year of the driver establishing residence. Check the country before you make an offer, not after.
A professional qualification obtained outside the EU or EEA is not recognised in France. An experienced driver arriving from outside Europe must take FIMO here, whatever they held before. Budget realistic time for that rather than discovering it after a contract is signed.
A carte de conducteur is required for the digital tachograph on in scope work, and ADR training where the load needs it. Say which of these the role actually needs, and remember that verifying the original documents remains the employer's responsibility.

It is neither one. Interim agencies advertise driver vacancies in this region heavily, and FastDriver.eu does something different: it publishes your own advert under your own name. No worker is placed, nobody stands between the pay you set and the driver who earns it, and no agency contract sits between your company and the person you hire.
Drivers already in the region apply alongside candidates elsewhere in France and in other European countries. EU, EEA, and Swiss nationals may work without a permit, while third-country nationals need a work authorisation that the employer applies for. The portal cannot guarantee how many applications arrive, whether a candidate is still free to start, or that anyone attends an interview.
Through the ANEF portal, as the employer rather than the candidate. Pay must meet the SMI, and the minimum grade set by the convention collective nationale des transports routiers, if it's higher. A permanent contract fits the salarié route, and a fixed-term contract the travailleur temporaire route. If the prefecture stays silent for two months, that counts as a refusal.

Permis C covers a rigid vehicle, permis CE an articulated unit, and permis D the coach and bus roles. The minimum ages are 18 for C1 and C1E, 21 for C and CE (dropping to 18 with the initial qualification), and 24 for D. Heavy category validity tracks the driver’s age and requires a medical at each renewal.
FIMO is the initial professional qualification, 140 hours, or 280 on the longer diploma route. FCO is the 35-hour refresher taken every five years. The carte de qualification de conducteur and code 95 printed on the licence both serve as evidence. It is a separate document from the carte conducteur used with the digital tachograph, and drivers mix them up. Can a lorry driver in Normandie move into coach and bus work?
Only partly, and the limit matters. The passerelle between goods and passenger work is 35 hours in each direction, but it converts the professional qualification and not the licence: the driver must already hold the target category. A CE holder without permis D has to pass that licence first. Training for permis D and FIMO voyageurs is delivered at Saint-Étienne-du-Rouvray.
EU and EEA licences need no exchange. Others depend on the reciprocity list, which sets out country by country whether Toutes, A et B, or B may be exchanged. Heavy categories need the Toutes marking. The exchange must start within a year of establishing residence. Ukraine does not appear on that list, so a Ukrainian driver takes the French examination instead.
They do not. Qualifications issued outside the EU and EEA do not transfer, so a driver with a long record elsewhere still sits FIMO in France before working professionally. That sits on top of whatever the licence requires, and the two processes are independent. Decide early who pays for the training and how long you can keep the vacancy open.
The equipment and the place, before anything else. Titles used here name the work directly: traction portuaire, frigorifique, citerne, ampliroll bennes, polyvalent. Add the licence category, FIMO and FCO, ADR where relevant, the coefficient, and the frais de route, which drivers read as carefully as the basic pay. Say whether the contract is permanent, fixed-term, or seasonal.
A candidate who already holds CE, FIMO and a current FCO can start as soon as your own checks are complete. For someone needing work authorisation, three weeks of publication come first, then an application with no published processing standard,d and a two-month point at which silence becomes refusal. Licence exchange or a French FIMO adds months. Nothing can be guaranteed.
The whole of the employment. Before a third-country national starts, the prefecture covering the workplace must confirm the residence document at least two working days in advance, and the dated request is worth keeping. The DPAE goes to Urssaf. For a third-country national on international transport or cabotage, the DREAL issues the attestation de conducteur.
It defines part of it. The three Ports de Normandie terminals handle around 200,000 lorries and 5.5 million tonnes of freight a year, with about 70,000 of those movements unaccompanied. The ports carry customs brokerage and veterinary and phytosanitary inspection accreditation, and inspection areas are being expanded for the Entry-Exit System. A driver crossing here deals with formalities as routine.
In the Manche, where unemployment runs at about 5.5%, against around 8.7% in Seine-Maritime. That is a spread of roughly three points inside one region, so a Cherbourg or Cotentin vacancy competes for a much smaller pool than one at Rouen or Le Havre. Pitch the pay and the shift pattern accordingly, and advertise the two areas separately.
