Every lorry working in Åland arrived on a ferry. The islands are an archipelago with no fixed link to anywhere, so the vehicle fleet, the freight and the drivers all cross water to get here, and the sailing rather than the distance sets every timetable. Cargo reaches the islands from Naantali to Långnäs, and the Naantali to Kapellskär service calls at Långnäs on its way to Sweden, which puts Åland on a route between two countries rather than at the end of a spur. Turku and Helsinki serve the islands from the Finnish side, and Stockholm, Kapellskär, and Grisslehamn from the Swedish side. The trade splits almost evenly in two directions: goods leaving for the mainland and goods leaving for other countries run to broadly similar tonnages, a little over a hundred and thirty thousand tonnes each way, while rather less arrives from abroad than from the mainland. The ferry operator charges by a published tariff and applies a higher rate to a through journey than to one that terminates in the island. Hence,o a vehicle passing between Finland and Sweden pays differently from one delivering here.
The road network is the island’s own in classification as well as in law. Åland has roughly eleven hundred kilometres of public road, about nine hundred and eighty of which are paved, and its road authority classifies them as landsväg, bygdeväg and kommunalväg; nothing in that classification corresponds to a motorway. The national road statistics exclude Åland altogether, so the country’s published figures for network length, surface and road class say nothing about the islands at all. The archipelago’s secondary roads are largely gravel, which the islands’ own documents state plainly, and most of them serve settlements reached by ferry rather than by road.
There is no Traficom service point anywhere in Åland, which is the practical consequence of everything above: no counter here takes a national licence application, because the licence that matters here is not a national one. A driver’s business goes to the islands’ police and to their vehicle authority instead, and a licence is collected at the police station in Mariehamn.
FastDriver.eu provides the platform structure. Independent recruiters remain responsible for candidate sourcing, lawful representation, data protection and accurate communication. Review the Åland driver requirements, the Åland employer page or the Finland recruiter page for the national overview.
Approved partners work through the recruiter portal. What is available depends on the verification outcome and the selected package.

No fixed link exists, so a sailing sets the timetable. The Kapellskär service calls at Långnäs, putting the islands on a route between two countries.
Landsväg, bygdeväg and kommunalväg, with nothing corresponding to a motorway, and the national road statistics exclude the islands entirely.
Åland has no Traficom counter. Licence business goes to the islands’ police and their vehicle authority, with collection in Mariehamn.
Approved partners may receive access to the existing recruiter or vendor portal according to the selected package.
Create and maintain structured profiles containing licence, experience, qualification, language and availability information.
Review relevant Åland employer requirements and identify candidates whose profiles may match the vacancy.
Request assistance with approved portal access, candidate profiles and relevant employer requirements.
Not every driver category has an active Finnish vacancy at any given time. Review the current employer requirements before presenting a candidate.
Registered recruitment companies, licensed employment placement businesses, driver-sourcing specialists and authorised recruitment consultants may submit an enquiry.
Recruiters may apply from any country when they can legally represent candidates and provide verifiable company information.
An enquiry is reviewed against the legal company name, registration, country of registration, business address, official company email, website, recruitment licence where required, responsible contact person and professional recruitment experience.
The review also covers the driver categories represented, the countries where candidates are sourced, the candidate permission procedure, the data protection process and the ability to provide accurate candidate documents.
Submitting an enquiry does not guarantee approval or portal access. Approval does not create a government licence or legal authorisation to perform regulated recruitment activities in Åland.
Each region has its own road network, its own exposure to the spring thaw and its own distance to the nearest examination and licence service point, while the licence itself is issued nationally rather than locally. You are reading the Åland page. Open another location to see the recruiter information there.
Recruiters must have a lawful basis for collecting, storing and sharing candidate information.
A recruiter must not upload a candidate profile without the candidate knowing about it and giving appropriate permission.
Candidates should understand which company collected their information, why it is being processed, which platform receives it and that suitable employers may review their profile.
They should also understand how long the information may be retained, how to request a correction, how to withdraw consent where consent is the legal basis and how to request deletion where applicable.
Use secure methods when processing passports, licences, driver cards, residence documents, medical information or other sensitive records. General guidance is published by the European Data Protection Board. A foreign driver settling in Åland holds a residence permit issued by the national immigration service, because immigration is a competence of the State rather than one of the islands' own, while the driving licence is issued by the Åland police under Åland law. So the two documents a professional driver needs come from two different legal orders, one national and one autonomous, which is a division that exists nowhere else in the country.
Platform access does not remove the recruiter's own data protection responsibilities.
EU, EEA and Swiss citizens generally benefit from freedom of movement under the applicable rules. You must still verify identity, licence, qualifications, experience and suitability for the position.
A valid EU or EEA driving licence is recognised in Finland while it remains valid, although professional qualification, validity and medical requirements may still apply. Never assume that every licence or professional document is automatically suitable for every vacancy. Åland legislates its own road traffic, under a road traffic act of its own rather than the national one, so the mainland rules on vehicle dimensions, winter equipment and seasonal weight limits do not automatically carry across, and the islands' own law is what governs them. The statistics office's road figures for the country exclude Åland for the same reason. What does apply everywhere here is water: the islands are an archipelago, so a goods vehicle reaches most destinations by ferry, the ferry operator charges by a published tariff with a higher rate for a through journey, and a sailing rather than a distance sets the timetable. The rule that catches a haulier unprepared, though, is fiscal rather than physical. Åland sits outside the Union's value added tax and excise territory while remaining inside its customs territory, so a tax border runs between the islands and the rest of the country. Goods crossing it in either direction are presented to Customs under an electronic tax border declaration, and the movement is treated as an import for value added tax even though it never leaves Finland. Part of that duty falls on the transporter rather than the trader: a presentation notification is due at the latest as the goods cross, unless the carrier has been told a declaration is already lodged and given its reference. Customs keeps offices at Mariehamn and at Berghamn in Eckerö. A driver who has run domestic work on the mainland has met nothing like it.
Third-country driver candidates may be presented when the profile is accurate and relevant to a stated employer requirement. Uploading such a candidate does not create permission to work or live in Finland.
A suitable candidate may require an appropriate employment offer, an employment authorisation and a residence permit, a visa where applicable, recognition or exchange of a driving licence, a certificate of professional competence and additional employer or authority documents. Åland legislates its own professional qualification as well, under an act and an ordinance of its own. Training is approved by the Åland government, the basic course ends in a theory examination, and it is the Åland police who issue the proof of competence or make the entry in the licence, which carries the harmonised code ninety-five and runs for five years. A certificate obtained in mainland Finland or in another European Economic Area state is valid in the islands, so a qualification is not lost by moving there. The language the examination may be sat in could not be established from Åland's own published rules: they provide for an oral or extended test where a candidate has difficulty understanding Swedish, which implies a Swedish baseline, but they name no languages, and the islands' authorities are the only ones who can state the position. The employment authorisation and the residence permit are separate steps and do not carry the same conditions.
Access to the Finnish labour market is decided nationally, so the position for a job in Åland is the same as anywhere else in the country. A driver from outside the European Union works on a residence permit for an employed person, decided by the national immigration service, which also runs the labour market test itself since the employment office's partial decision was abolished. The worker applies and pays the fee, and the employer supplies the terms of employment separately through the service built for employers, so the application is the candidate's and the particulars are the employer's. A first permit is applied for from outside the country and an extension from inside it. The permit is tied to the field of employment named in it, a zero-hours contract does not qualify, and the employer has to satisfy itself that the worker has the professional skills the job requires. Unless the occupation is exempt, the vacancy has to be advertised on the national job market service for at least two weeks before a permit is granted. The attestation for international carriage sits outside that arrangement. Traficom's own service for it is published as covering the whole country except Åland, so which authority issues it for a carrier established in the islands is a question for the Åland administration rather than for the national agency. Candidates can review our driving licence eligibility guidance.
Never advertise guaranteed visa sponsorship, guaranteed permits or guaranteed employment.
FastDriver.eu provides a job and recruiter collaboration portal. It does not automatically authorise a recruiter to post, lease, supply or employ workers in Åland. Åland is outside the Finnish licensing system, and a driver who settles there deals with a different legal order rather than a local variation of the national one. The Autonomy Act gives the islands legislative power over road traffic, and Åland has its own driving licence law, its own road traffic act and its own licence register. A licence and the permit that precedes it are granted by the Åland police authority rather than by Traficom, the examination is conducted by the islands' vehicle authority, which answers to the Åland government, and the finished licence is collected at the police station in Mariehamn. Traficom runs no service point in the islands, and the national driving licence act expressly does not govern whether a licence is valid there. The residence condition is Åland's own: permanent residence in the islands for at least a hundred and eighty-five days in a calendar year, or six months of study there. For a driver from outside the European Economic Area the sharpest rule is Åland's own as well. Such a licence is valid for two years from settling, but it does not carry the right to drive an Åland-registered lorry or bus for gain, and exchange without a fresh examination reaches only the motorcycle and car categories. A licence issued in Åland is treated on the mainland as one from an EU or EEA state. The reverse is not quite symmetrical: the islands operate a licence class of their own which is valid in Åland and nowhere else, so not every Åland entitlement travels.
Candidate introduction, employment placement, temporary worker supply, cross-border posting and worker leasing each carry their own obligations, and the one you are actually performing decides which apply.
Identify the actual cooperation model before you begin. Recruitment, temporary agency supply, cross-border posting and direct employment are treated differently under Finnish and European rules, and a cross-border posting carries notification obligations of its own before the work starts. Platform access replaces none of that, and it is not a posting notification, a residence permit, an immigration approval, a Finnish business registration or a candidate employment contract.
Candidate profiles should carry the licence categories, Code 95 status, driver card details, ADR certification and route experience relevant to the role.

Yes. Recruiters from Finland and other countries may apply when they can provide verifiable business information and legally represent their candidates.
The Åland police authority, not Traficom. The islands legislate their own driving licence law under the Autonomy Act, their vehicle authority conducts the examination, and the finished licence is collected at the police station in Mariehamn. The islands have no Traficom service point at all.
Yes. Submitting an initial enquiry is free. Paid portal access or a subscription may be offered after verification.
No. FastDriver.eu is a specialised driver job and professional connection portal.
No. The hiring employer determines the employment relationship and makes the final selection decision.
No. We review every recruiter enquiry before granting access.
No. A subscription does not guarantee employer contact, interviews, placements or revenue.
Truck, bus, coach, van, delivery, taxi, chauffeur and other professional driver candidates, including ferry feeder and island distribution drivers.
Yes. International candidates must still meet the employer requirements and the applicable Finnish work and residence rules, which the national immigration service decides and which are separate from anything the transport agency decides about a licence.
Recruiters must have a valid legal basis, provide appropriate privacy information and follow the applicable retention rules.
Yes, when the candidate has given appropriate permission and the profile is relevant. Uploading a candidate does not guarantee immigration eligibility.
A candidate must know that a profile is being created and shared. Separately, the recruiter needs an appropriate lawful basis for processing the data, and consent is only one available basis.
The required information depends on the position. A complete profile may also require licence, qualification, experience, language and work authorisation information.
Only when there is a lawful reason, appropriate candidate permission and a secure processing method.
The platform may review documents for completeness or visible issues, but official authenticity and recognition remain with the responsible authorities and employers.
No. The worker applies for the residence permit for an employed person and pays the fee, while the employer provides the terms of employment separately. The national immigration service decides it, and it is not a matter for the transport agency that issues the licence.
No. The responsible embassy or authority makes visa decisions.
No, and here the exchange is not even a national matter. A licence from outside the European Economic Area can be exchanged without a fresh examination only for motorcycle and car categories, and such a licence does not carry the right to drive an Åland-registered lorry or bus for gain at all. The platform is not involved in any of it.
Communication must follow the access and contact process provided by the relevant FastDriver.eu package.
Under the islands’ own legislation rather than the national scheme. The Åland government approves the training; the basic course ends with a theory examination, and the police issue the proof or make the entry in the licence. The islands’ published rules do not state the language the examination may be sat in, so the Åland authorities can confirm it.
An individual consultant may submit an enquiry where the activity is legally permitted and the required business or professional information can be verified.
A training centre may enquire when it has lawful authority and candidate permission. Training activity alone does not automatically authorise recruitment.
Any candidate charge must comply with applicable law, be disclosed clearly and never be connected to a false guarantee.
FastDriver.eu may reject the enquiry, remove profiles, suspend access or terminate cooperation.
